First Things First

Before joining Vendetta or really any server, you should absolutely ensure these 2 settings are as shown here.

console

In-game Options:

  1. Navigate to Keyboard/Mouse settings: Allow Developer Console - Enabled
  2. Navigate to Multiplayer settings: Custom Server Content - Allow All

IP Commands

There are two ways to join both official and custom servers through console commands:

1. Connect

Typing connect IP:Port will connect you directly to that server.

Example:

connect 169.150.253.112:27015

2. mm_dedicated_force_servers

Typing mm_dedicated_force_servers IP:Port sets the server you connect to when you start the game through a lobby. You NEED to set the lobby to best available dedicated.

Note: This will not work if the server is occupied.

Example:

mm_dedicated_force_servers 169.150.253.112:27015

To view all the servers within Left 4 Dead, use the console command: openserverbrowser

From here, you can right-click on a server, view server info, and copy the IP. Click on the "favorites" tab, add a server, then paste Vendetta's IP into your favorites... because it's the best server in the game. :) (Sorry Firebase, we love you too)

Menu Bind Fix

So you want to use a menu within a custom server and find your number keys aren't all functioning properly? This issue arises either because you have or at one point had something else bound to those keys. Commonly the number keys are rebound to vocalizations. So here's how you fix it:

  1. Press the ~ key to open the developer console.
  2. Copy and paste the following command in and hit enter:

bind 1 slot1; bind 2 slot2; bind 3 slot3; bind 4 slot4; bind 5 slot5; bind 6 slot6; bind 7 slot7; bind 8 slot8; bind 9 slot9; bind 0 slot10

Menu keys should work now.

Note: This will likely delete/override anything you currently have bound to those keys.

4GB Patch

This patch increases the amount of memory that Left 4 Dead can use, reducing crashes especially on custom maps.

  4gb

Method 1:

  1. Navigate to: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Left 4 Dead 2
  2. Copy: left4dead2.exe
  3. Navigate to: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\left 4 dead
  4. Paste left4dead2.exe
  5. Delete the original left4dead.exe
  6. Rename left4dead2.exe to left4dead.exe
  7. DONE!

If you don't own L4D2, alternatively download the .exe here.

Method 2:

  1. Go to: https://ntcore.com/4gb-patch/
  2. Download the 4GB patch
  3. Run the program and select the left4dead.exe in the directory mentioned above
  4. DONE!

Note: I recommend method 1, as it requires no additional download. Also, it seemingly leads to less crashing with custom maps, mods, etc., in my experience.

Autoexec.cfg

An autoexec.cfg is a file that is automatically executed every time the game is launched.

The file is located at: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\left 4 dead\left4dead\cfg

By default, this file will not be present, so you will have to create one.

"I won't bore you with the complex details"...Buuut

An autoexec allows you to adjust various aspects of the game: volume levels, mouse settings, binds, glow colors, and much more.

If you'd like to download a comprehensive autoexec.cfg with various fixes and optimized settings, I will provide one here. If you already have one and would like to compare or add bits and pieces of your own, I'd recommend using a beautiful program called Notepad++ to edit it!

FAQ

A player is causing chaos in the server, what can we do to stop it?

Well the first thing you should do is try to kick or ban them, I wouldn't recommend kicking from the pause menu as there are ways people can avoid that, and join right back. This is a Valve issue. Instead use the !votes command in chat and that should deter the really pesky ones. Using the ban option in there will only temporarily ban them for 2 hours, to prevent abuse of that feature, and keep them coming back on another account. For all other issues and reports please message on steam or email from our contact page

I'm unable to connect to Vendetta, why isn't it showing up in the server browser?

If you're unable to connect from lobby or even directly, it's either full or down for maintenance. Currently there is only ONE server that we host, and we don't do 5+ players...yet...or likely ever. These things aren't free, ya know? I'd like to expand one day, so consider helping out and donating to my Ko-fi, located on the contact page!

Why is my game crashing? How do I fix it?

L4D is an old and complicated game, the answer is usually simple though. The first solution would be that you need the 4gb patch to allow the game more memory, this will fix crashing issues 95% of the time. If that doesn't solve it then you probably have too many mods, or mods that conflict. If you have too many custom maps, this is usually the result. Simply move them to another folder and put them back when needed. If all else fails, you need to verify the integrity of your game files in Steam. Last resort, backup needed files and reinstall the game.

Why isn't my Developer Console showing up?

You need to enable it in your settings, but surely you saw the VERY first section of this page...right? Press the ~ key to open it. If that doesn't work or you don't even know what key that is, rebind it in the keyboard settings.

How do I install custom maps or mods?

First off you're going to need winrar or 7-zip to open the zip files that contain folders or vpks. For custom maps simply drop the vpk in your addons folder and you're done, exact directory and more information is located on the "Maps" page, so head there. For all other mods it's a mixed bag, but generally the easiest method that will work for most mods involves using a program called GCFscape and renaming the pak01_dir.vpk file. I'm not going to bother detailing all that here, as theres way better guides already out there on gamemaps and the steam community pages. I'll link some here though.

Known Issues

Veteran/Custom Difficulty Inconsistency

It's rare, but sometimes this old and buggy game will default back to a command's original value, as such things may feel off and will simply need to be executed again. So, switch back to a vanilla difficulty and vote for veteran/realism again to fix this.

Map Vote Intro

Voting into an Official or Custom map using the !votes command is a convenient way to get into a specific map without resorting to lobbies. However doing this will most of the time skip intros or dialogue on the first map. It's not really an issue, it's just something to be aware of.

Black screen when loading

This may happen on your first time loading in on some maps, due to downloading custom textures. Vendetta is equipped with easter eggs and other decorations that you may or may not notice. It will simply load in a few seconds, so nothing of concern. Every other time you play that map it will load as usual.
